Helping the vulnerable and boosting local businesses
The recession hasn’t helped. Like many other towns, Weston and the villages have seen too many local businesses close, destroying local jobs and forcing people to rely on benefits simply because there are no jobs. We need to be doing everything we can to support our businesses weather the economic storm, and to encourage new ones to start up too. The more successful businesses we have to create wealth for Weston & the villages, the better our economic growth, development opportunities and jobs will be. As Shadow Business Minister for the Conservative Party, working with Ken Clarke, John provides as much help and advice as possible to businesses at a local and national level too. As part of his shadow ministerial role, John’s developed the Conservative Party’s approach to better regulation, coming up with a coherent plan to reduce the amount of Government red tape and paperwork that businesses have to deal with. You can see a copy of his plan here. He’s also helped advise on their policy to cutting Corporation tax, from 22% to 20% for small companies, and from 28% to 25% for larger ones, as well as abolishing tax on new jobs created by new businesses within the first two years of a Conservative government. John also helps out with local charities on a regular basis and, as president of Weston’s YMCA and a Governor of Weston College, tries to provide as much help as possible to young people as well. As such, John fully backs the Conservative Party’s aim to reform the Big Lottery Fund to ensure that it spends all its lottery funding on the voluntary and community sectors as well as reforming Gift Aid to encourage more people to give to charity. The Government’s own statistics put parts of Weston-super-Mare amongst the most deprived in the country. And the problems aren’t confined to low-income families and people on benefits either: pensioners have to survive on fixed incomes which never seem to keep pace with prices too.

Weston-super-Mare MP and Tourism & Heritage Minister John Penrose is celebrating this month after successfully safeguarding tax breaks for the town’s self-catering accommodation businesses, helping to protect the sea-side resort’s tourism industry and jobs...
