FF4S Campaign

Fairer funding for local schools

Government cash for North Somerset schools have left local pupils in one of the worst funded Education Authorities in the country. In 2009 we got £3,895 per pupil. That’s:

  • £138 less per pupil than nearby Bath and North East Somerset
  • £625 less per pupil than nearby Bristol
  • £2,628 less per pupil than the London Borough of Tower Hamlets

John believes that this is unfair and has called on the Government to end the funding formula ‘postcode lottery’ because no matter where they live, all children with the same needs should have the same access to:

  • teacher and teacher assistant time and attention
  • the national curriculum and a wide range of other activities
  • up to date resources and equipment
  • extra help for special needs to ensure inclusion and personalised learning
  • well-managed and serviced schools.

In January 2006, John urged the government to increase the average funding per schoolchild in North Somerset and has been running a long campaign to petition them until they do so, including taking the issue directly to the door of the Prime Minister. And the hard work is paying off. We’re now getting an extra £321 for every single pupil, an increase of 9%, but the system is still unfair and there’s still a lot of work left to do. John has pledged to keep badgering the Government until local pupils get the funding they deserve.
