Fairer funding for local healthcare Over the years the lack of funding has taken its toll. Both NHS North Somerset (which funds our local GP surgeries) and Weston Hospital built up multi-million pound debts, we had too few GP practices in Weston itself, and the hospital struggled to meet local people’s health needs without enough money. But now, as a result of sustained pressure from John in Parliament together with plenty of support from local healthcare managers and professionals, things have started to improve. Firstly the Government agreed to abandon plans to merge North Somerset healthcare back into Avon, after John mobilised all the local MPs from every party to oppose it. That meant Weston wouldn’t go back to being overshadowed by Bristol, as had always happened in the past. Then the Government produced three years of above-average funding for local healthcare. This narrowed the annual cash shortfall substantially, although it didn’t solve the problem entirely. And most recently Health Ministers have agreed to fund two brand new GP practices in Weston, which was long overdue. But we're not out of the woods yet. We’re still underfunded every year and many local GP surgeries need new premises, so they can deliver a wider range of services to their patients and attract more trainee doctors to become the next generation of Weston’s GPs. John has promised to keep pushing Government Health Ministers to deal with these important issues. We’ve made a lot of progress, but they ought to finish the job too. |

Weston hospital figures: No one knows who to trust, says local MPWeston-super-Mare MP John Penrose has said that "no-one knows who to trust" after figures released today by health monitoring body Dr Foster have placed Weston Hospital in the 12 worst-performing hospitals in the country for patient safety. Yet only last month the Care Quality Commission, the independent regulator of all health and adult social care in England, gave it 13 out of 14 for the same thing. National figures present a "worrying" picture for local NHS, says Weston MPResponding to NHS Performance Ratings released today, which shows that the quality of services at Weston Hospital has decreased over the last year, Weston-super-Mare MP John Penrose said: "This is very worrying news. Staff have been working extremely hard to give Weston the hospital it deserves but these rankings show that the quality of service has actually decreased, not increased. Local people will rightly be concerned by these figures. That's why I'll be meeting with Weston hospital chiefs as soon as possible to discuss why our local service has slipped, and what can be done to bring it back up to spec"... |

Weston’s hospital and local GPs have been underfunded for years. We get £9 million less every year than the Government’s own figures say we should. That’s not fair on hard-working doctors, nurses and staff, or on local patients and their families either.
