John spends as much of his time at home in Weston, Worle and the villages as possible, meeting residents and helping them with local issues. The rest of his time is spent either in London in the House of Commons acting as Weston's voice in Westminster, or speaking up for Tourism and Heritage organisations as a Government Minister.
From 2005 to 2008 John served on the Work and Pensions Select Committee which scrutinises problems with the pensions and benefits system. From 2006 to 2008 he also worked for Oliver Letwin MP on the Conservative Party’s Policy Review. He was Joint Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Further Education & Lifelong Learning and in 2009 he became a Shadow Business Minister working for Ken Clarke on cutting red tape, consumer rights and competition policy. In May 2010, Prime Minister David Cameron appointed John as the Government’s Tourism and Heritage Minister, meaning he can be an even stronger voice for Weston, Worle and the villages.
