Tougher policing to limit drug crime in Weston-super-Mare?

E-mail Print

A new police plan which outlines a higher focus on drug crime has been welcomed by Weston-super-Mare’s MP – who says drugs ‘ruin lives and fuel crime’.

"Drugs ruin lives and fuel crime, whether it’s addicts stealing to finance a habit or violence between rival dealers."

Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), Sue Mountstevens, has unveiled a police plan which prioritises drug crime, antisocial behaviour, burglary and road safety.

The plan says: “The harm caused by illegal drugs is significant, wide-ranging and costly – and they are a major issue of local concern.”

Police will now work more closely with communities and other agencies to tackle drugs and the other crime they cause.

Weston’s MP, John Penrose, who wrote to the PCC asking for more focus on local drug crime, has welcomed the plan, and said: “Drugs ruin lives and fuel crime, whether it’s addicts stealing to finance a habit or violence between rival dealers.

“If we can get drug dealers off the streets through tougher and more efficient policing, as well as better treatment and support to give addicts a better chance to get their lives back on track, there’s no reason why we can’t keep moving forward.”
